Christ In Eastern Christian Thought
by Jonh Meyendorff

This major study of Byzantine Christology is at the same time a study of the Orthodox understanding of man and his salvation. Focusing on the concept of hypostasis or "person," Meyendorff states that "man is truly man when he participates in divine life...[and] this participation in no way diminishes his authentically human existence, human energy, and will."

Christ is in Our Midst
Letters From a Russian Monk
by Father John (Anonymous)

Mankind has become so earthbound! People have quite forgotten that this life of ours is the path to eternity and a preparation for it: they get excited and worked up in this vale of tears. You meet very few with whom you can talk about the one thing needful.
So writes this saintly Russian elder in one of his many letters from his monastery in Valamo, the monastery which was his home for over fifty years. To this monk, who died in 1958, "the one thing needful" is God, and the path to God is prayer, "prayer unceasing."

Life In Christ, The
by St Nicholas Cabasilas

The Life in Christ by Nicholas Cabasilas is a remarkable product of Byzantium's last great flowering of theology. At a time when secular humanism was increasingly asserting man's complete autonomy, Cabasilas proclaimed that man's true life lies not in himself, but in Christ. For him, man's redemption in Jesus Christ is not just a matter of history, which can be elucidated simply by scholarly endeavor. It is a saving event in which man is called to participate here and now, in body and spirit as well as intellect, through the sacramental life of the Church.

Mystery of Death, The
by Nikolaos P. Vassiliadis

".... Let no one fear death for the Savior's death liberated us from it. Even though the Savior was held for a short time by it, He abolished death by the power of His Pasion. By descending into Hades with His rarional soul, the Lord freed the souls of those in bondage. Hades was filled with bitterness when he tasted of the Savior's body. This was foretold by prophet Isaiah when he said triuaphantly: ( Hades was embittered when he met in his dismal subterranian kingdom) (Isaiah 14,9: LXX). ...." (St John Chrysostom)

O Death Where Is Thy Sting?
by Alexander Schmemann

In this brief collection, Father Alexander Schmemann does not have the luxury for platitudes and pleasantries on the most difficult of life's ultimate questions. Taking us to the heart of Christian revelation and anthropology, he leads us unequivocally and directly, as only he can, to discole why the apostle Paul calls death the "last enemy" (1 Cor. 15:26) and Christ's decisive answer to this enemy.

Orthodox Psychotherapy
The science of the Fathers
by Metropolitan of Nafpaktos Hierotheos Vlachos

I feel it my duty to give a few basic explanations for the study and understanding of the chapters which follow. The title 'Orthodox Psychotherapy' has been given to the book as a whole because it presents the teaching of the Fathers on curing the soul. I know that the term 'psychotherapy' is almost modern and is used by many psychiatrists to indicate the method which they follow for curing neurotics. But since many psychiatrists do not know the Church's teaching or do not wish to apply it, and since their anthropology is very different from the anthropology and soteriology of the Fathers, in using the term 'psychotherapy', I have not made use of their views.

Orthodox Spirituality
A Brief Introduction
by Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos

The spiritual person is he who partakes of and participates in the energies of the Most Holy Spirit; he, who has himself become a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. This does not constitute an abstract, emotional or intellectual spirituality. The bearer of Orthodox spirituality par excellence is the Saint who is revealed through his teachings and his relics. The non-spiritual individual, who is deprived of the Holy Spirit, is the psychological and carnal person. It is precisely the above distinction which points out the difference between Orthodox spirituality and other"spiritualities".

Philokalia, The
Vol 1

The Philokalia is a collection of texts on prayer and the spiritual life, written between the fourth and fifteenth centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition. First published in Greek in 1782, translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has had a decisive influence upon the Orthodox Church during the last two centuries, and it continues to be read more and more widely. The Philokalia is devoted to themes of universal significance: how we may develop our inner powers and awake from illusion; how we may overcome fragmentation and achieve wholeness; how we may attain contemplative stillness and union with God.

Repentance
by Archimandrite Papacostas

The title of this book, the one word "Repentance", is a term that causes man of our modern society a feeling of discomfort similar to that which a sick man experiences on hearing the name of an unpleasant drug. Nevertheless, in every age and far more in the present deeply uneasy, tired and unsettled age nothing is more useful, more indispensable and more salutary than repentance.

Serve the Lord with Gladness
by Lev Gillet

Serve the Lord with Gladness brings together two related meditations on liturgical and priestly service. The first meditation "Our Life in the Liturgy" consists of a simple yet beautiful explanation of the Divine Liturgy. It leads the reader step by step through the unfolding Eucharistic mystery, providing a profound spiritual vision of this most significant aspect of the Church's service to the Lord. The second mediation, entitled "Be My Priest," focuses upon the spiritual nature necessary for those called to the priestly ministry. Both evangelical and Eucharistic in its emphasis, the work proclaims that all priesthood finds its sources and fulfillments in the person of Jesus Christ.

Suffering & Salvation
by Archim. Vasilios Bakogiannis .

"Every mortal is short-lived", and "full of wrath" says Scripture (Job14.1). We're buffeted by misfortunes, sorrows, sickness and the loss of our loved ones! The burning question is: "Why in such a brief life are we subjected to so many troubles?"
We'll see the answer in this book.

The Diary of a Russian Priest
by Fr. Alexander Elchaninov

Alexander Elchaninov, one of the most gifted priests of the Russian emigration, died from a tragic illness in 1934, at the age of fifty-three. Because Fr Alexander came to the priesthood through the gates of secular culture, this book will be of particular value to all struggling to live the Christian life in an increasingly secular and materialistic world. He writes on themes of universal concern — on sin and nervous disease, on marriage, on the meaning of art, on facing illness and death.

The Philokalia
The Bible of Orthodox Spirituality
by Fr. Anthony M. Coniaris preface by Stanley S. Harakas

Brings the Orthodox spirituality of the Philokalia out of the monastery into everyday living. Addresses the relevance today of the subjects covered by the Fathers of the Philokalia, i.e. Vigilance (nepsis), Ascesis, Overcoming the Passions, Hesychia (silence), Prayer, the Bible, Theosis, the Jesus Prayer, the Gift of Tears, the Relationship of Mind and Heart, etc. Quotes extensively from the Fathers of the Philokalia on each of the above subjects. This book makes the spirituality of the Philokalia practical, relating it to everyday living. It is not a book for theologians but for the average Orthodox lay person. Fr. Harakas writes, "Those who read this book will come to a deepening of their spiritual life. Their heart will be touched, moved, and warmed." Written for lay readers.

Watchfulness and Prayer
Themes from the Philokalia
by Archim. Ioannikios Kotsonis

Watchfulness and mental prayer is not the exclusive property of monastics. To be sure, it is used primarily by them because their quiet, saintly life renders itself to it more readily. However, if it is every man's destiny to be deified through purification from passions - and without this internal catharsis, in the words of the Lord, every thing else is futile - then watchfulness and prayer open the age-old tried and tested road which leads to the perfection described in the Gospels.

Staretz, or "elder", is a title given to Orthodox monks of particular spiritual development. Staretz Silouan was a Russian peasant whose only formal education consisted of two winters at the village school. But on Mt Athos, rooted in a tradition reaching back to the very beginnings of Christian monasticism, he was taught of God and attained wisdom akin to that of the Desert Fathers.
