On the Holy Icons To many modern Christians the question of icon veneration may seem a marginal issue in theology. To St Theodore the Studite, writing in the midst of the iconoclastic controversy of the eighth and ninth centuries, it was clear that iconoclasm is a serious error, which alienates its followers from God as much as any other heresy. That is to say, rejection of Christian veneration of images effectively denies God's incarnation, which alone makes human salvation possible. If Christ could not be portrayed, then He was not truly man, and humanity was not truly united with God in Him. 12.5 x 18.5 Soft Bound. Pages 115. |

The Cappadocian Fathers After the Emperor Constantine made the Church's faith legal in 313, there was a tremendous flowering of Christian culture and a creative and turbulent encounter between the Christian community and the classical heritage of late antiquity. In the final third of the fourth century the three great Cappadocian Fathers were at the centre of this exciting encounter. Their leader was St Basil, an ecclesiastical statesman, social reformer and monastic founder as well as a theologian. His friend St Gregory of Nazianzus was a brilliant preacher and sensitive poet who gave classic expression to the theology and spirituality of the Holy Trinity in luminous prose and versa. Basil's brother St Gregory of Nyssa was renowned tor the depth ot his speculative theology and mystical spirituality. Though they collaborated and shared many common perspectives, each had a unique gift and personality. 14X21 Soft Bound. Pages 129 |

Three Treatises On The Divine Images Is all Christian art fundamentally blasphemous ? That was the question posed aggressively by the Christian iconoclasts of the eight century in a bitter controversy. The resounding answer 'No' from John of Damascus helped to secure the future of art in the service of Christ. Without his brilliant defense, both profound and at times earthly, we might well have had no icons, murals and mosaics in churches to elevate and enrich our spirits. 12.5 18.5 Soft Bound. Pages 164 |
